Overview

BAWAR* is committed to making our services as accessible as possible. Our efforts to be accessible are a work in progress and we appreciate feedback. Please feel free to contact us at accessibility@bawar.org with any questions about accessibility or concerns/feedback.

Agency Name

Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR) recognizes that our name presents a barrier to some who may be interested in accessing services due to the gendered language. We represent and serve all genders within our agency and anyone who has been impacted by sexual violence.

Wheelchair Access

The BAWAR office is located on the second floor of a wheelchair accessible building with ramps and an elevator. However, the counseling rooms do not all have door frames wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair, so please request an accessible room when scheduling an intake/appointment (counselors/therapists will arrange for a recurring accessible room after initial request and ongoing service provision).

Language Translation

BAWAR offers a majority of our services in Spanish through our Latinx Program. Please request a Spanish-speaking advocate and/or counselor when inquiring about services. For all other languages (aside from ASL), BAWAR uses a language access line.

Scent Free Environment

BAWAR cannot guarantee a scent-free environment due to the building we are housed in. We ask all staff, volunteers and clients to please arrive with minimal fragrances in order to support those who have chemical sensitivities and allergies. For more information and a list of recommended products, please visit the East Bay Meditation Center website.

Gender Neutral Bathrooms

The building BAWAR is housed in has two gender neutral bathrooms on the first floor. After hours, BAWAR will re-label the binary restrooms on the second floor as gender neutral. BAWAR supports the decision for people to choose the restroom that is right for them, and that no one be questioned for their choice. BAWAR staff will direct all new clients, volunteers and guests to each floor’s bathrooms (BAWAR is located on the second floor).

Childcare

The building BAWAR is housed in provides free childcare during business hours.

Food

Please contact accessibility@bawar.org to request accommodations for allergies and dietary restrictions when an event will serve food. BAWAR generally offers vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options throughout our Sexual Assault Counselor Training.

Transportation

The BAWAR office is located in the Alameda County Family Justice Center (470 27th Street, Oakland 94612). The building has a free client parking lot in the front and free two hour street parking in the front of the building on 27th street and behind the building on 28th street. The building is 8 blocks from 19th Street BART station.

Sliding Scale Cost of Events

BAWAR offers all client services free of charge and our events/workshops are always on a sliding scale. The Sexual Assault Counselor Training is offered at $50-$100 sliding scale in order to cover the cost of materials, transportation and speakers.
